Medication Collection Disposal Program

Residents may drop off prescription or over-the-counter medications (no needles or sharps) in a collection kiosk located in the lobby of the Braintree Police Department at 282 Union Street. Residents can place unused household medications / drugs into the collection kiosk anonymously. Blackout any personal information on the label. There is no fee for the disposal service.

Don't Keep Unused or Expired Medications

Residents are encouraged not to keep unused or expired medications. After expiration, pharmaceutical compounds can deteriorate, lose effectiveness, and may be harmful. Storing medications may also create a danger for children through accidental or intentional usage. Parents are advised to dispose of any medication that is no longer needed.

MedReturn Drug Collection Unit

The new MedReturn Drug Collection Unit provides a safe, legal and environmentally acceptable drug disposal method. The safe disposal of medications protects water quality and can lower the risk of substance abuse in the community. Disposing of medications by flushing them down the toilet or sink is thought to be a contributing factor in water contamination. Incineration is now the preferred method of disposal of unused, expired or unwanted medications.

The MedReturn Drug Collection Unit was donated to the Town of Braintree, in collaboration with Impact Quincy, a program of Bay State Community Services Inc., through funding from the MA Department of Public Health, Bureau of Substance Abuse Services.

What is Collected

  • Prescription medicines (pills, capsules, ointments, lotions and/or patches)
  • Over the counter medicines (pills, capsules, ointments, vitamins)
  • Pet medications
  • Sample medications
  • Liquid medicine in glass or leakproof containers

What is not Collected

  • Thermometers
  • Inhalers
  • Aerosols
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Medication from businesses or clinics
  • Needles (SHARPS)

Please be advised that the Town's policy for response to discarded syringes/needles if found on public property is to contact the Braintree Police Department at 781-843-1212 or the Braintree Health Department at 781-794-8090 for their retrieval and investigation.
