Highway/Grounds Division's functions include:

Street Opening Permits

New Permit Fees Effective February 1st, 2021
  • Street Opening Fee - $200.00 for 1st 10 feet, Plus $1.00 per foot over 10 feet.
  • Sidewalk Opening Fee - $200.00
Permits will only be issued to Contractors

Permit Requirements:

  • Valid Massachusetts Dig Safe Ticket Number to Date
  • Location and Description of Proposed Work
  • The footage of the Area to be excavated and Depth
  • Utility Contractor's License Performance Surety Bond
  • Any Trench with a depth exceeding 3' extending onto Private Property, must obtain a Trenching Permit from the Building and Inspections Department as well.

Street Opening Permits will be available beginning in April, weather permitting, at the Highway Barn located at 245 Union Street.

Please be advised this is a contract for snow plowing only. Contracts for snow hauling, sanding, and salt spreading will be bid separately. Please contact the Highway Department for more information. This is a one-year contract with the Town’s option to renew for two additional years. Renewals will require updated insurance, operator, and vehicle information.

Vegetative Control Yearly Operational Plan 

A yearly operational plan (YOP) must be submitted to the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) every year herbicides are intended for use to maintain public ways. The YOP provides a detailed program for vegetation management including the methods used to identify target vegetation and sensitive areas, planned treatment methods, herbicides and herbicides mixtures and rates for the year.
